The character development in this novel is a slow burn for sure. I am looking forward to when the MC finally breaks and goes insane.

Just read the 2 latest chapters and i have to say I'm disappointed with the author. It's like he hates making a likeable and interesting main character and wants to make a frustrating character that's no different from a boring machine doing nothing but training and trying to get more powerful. For what? To beat god? Why does he even need to beat god? What's he gonna do after beating him, and that's a big "if"?? He's so bland and boring the only commendable thing about him is will power, everything else is monotonous and boring as f*ck

That's the best thing about this character. Everybody wants to be like him, and that's why people read it. Some enjoy character development, while others like character deterioration.

Shut up and read something else then. You whine on a web novel site and can’t accept that this character isn’t designed for your liking It’s very obvious you didn’t actually read the whole story and probably skimmed through most of the earlier parts which is why you made such a stupid comment. Do you even know why he’s like this? You likely don’t because of your impatient skimming. The reason he’s like this is because the Author is trying to mimic the PTSD of soldiers when they go through traumatic events. Shang has to keep climbing the power ladder because he is the Child of Calamity. It was mentioned that he needed to beat God in order to stop the Abominations, because the Abominations grow in power relative to him. He is forced to go through the path of constant work and training, forcing himself to go through miserable and traumatic events. The reason why Shang acts the way he is is a response to the life he has been going through.

And he has fully made the choice of choosing that life, nobody is forcing him to do it this way, he's literally the only cause to this aside from god giving him the entropy affinity. Did god tell him to kill jerald? Did god tell him to stop interacting with people completely and become a ruthless, prideful murderer? He's the one choosing to become stronger this way.

And why should i be repressed from expressing my opinion? I don't like this sh*tty character shang has now, I'm fully allowed to say that and i stand by that statement

      • Galoto 7

Who told you i didn't read it fully? Just because i dislike it means i skimmed? I'm fully aware that shang went through a lot but I'm just disappointed in the author's writing when his other novel managed to make me finish it in less than a month, and it has 1.3k chapters. It's simply that his works are too different now

I didn’t even mention anything about you disliking the story. The fact that you already projected such a statement proves that you wrote this in anticipation of criticism and then claim everyone who disagrees with your opinion or finds it stupid to be “fans who don’t accept any opinions”. I am rebutting you and claiming that your comment was profoundly stupid, isn’t that what you are asking for? A proper rebuttal?

      • Galoto 7

And it's profoundly stupid because i dislike something you like? Great mental gymnastics you got there, never said i dislike the whole novel but shang is just too uninteresting other than his powers

You said I claimed you skimmed because you disliked the story, and I did not mention that. “Who told you I didn’t read it fully? Just because I dislike it means I skimmed?” Is what you said lmf** If he was previously different, and he became a certain way maybe it’s because of the series of events? So you actually prefer a whining overly emotional character that Shang was previously? You claim I used mental gymnastics while you twist and turn your words and then pick a single statement to argue just to make yourself seem right. I’ve already proven to you why Shang is the way he is, and how he wasn’t a training machine or a “psychotic murderer” and was only this way because of PTSD and circumstances. He also had no choice because of the Abominations and the fact that he was the Child of Calamity. Your lack of context implies that you skimmed through the novel and came here to complain immediately afterwards.

Yeah because why else would you skim other than you being bored and disliking the story? Can't use your brain to think of something like that from context clues?

The reason I keep sh*tt*ng on your take is because it shows that you have no understanding of why Shang is the way he is, and your lack of empathy as well because you don’t know what the man’s been through. You’re being disagreed by every one that replies to you because your take is utter sh*t and stupid. That doesn’t mean you’re stupid. This isn’t personal.

Jerald was killed because Jerald knew Shang was the child of calamity, and because he had to protect his secret of him being the Child of Calamity. It was mentioned that Shang was fearful of having his secret found out, not that he wanted to murder Jerald who they both acknowledged to be close friends, and he even regretted killing Jerald which was expressed later on. Shang trained a large portion of his life in order to get revenge for Jerald. Shang is also displayed to be emotional and afraid during the earlier parts of the novel. He felt guilty for harming a student during the School Arc which was when he became overemotional. Just like you skimmed through my explanation, you skimmed through the entire story until where it became “good” 🤷‍♂️

''earlier parts of the novel'' yeah he ''was'' like that, now he's just a mass of mechanical insecurity that does nothing but t*rt*r* itself and get stronger, it's very uninteresting as a character

Ok ima say this real quick. One the main draw of this book is training arcs it’s target audience is training arc junkies(I’m one of them) everything else is secondary and yet the author still manages to put pretty decent character development yea it’s not perfect and the main character isn’t likable to a lot of people but he’s developing and as many have said there are a lot of signs of change to come. Two his goal being “pointless” doesn’t really mean much, every goal is pointless if you really think about it, people make goals cause pursuing them fulfills them in some way or another even if it seems pointless or like a waste of time to some other person.

I'm not gonna deny that i like seeing shang get stronger and destroy enemies but what's the point when all he's doing is just that? There's 0 VARIETY in this novel for now and this wasn't what it was like before, I'm disappointed

For me personally the draw of the book is the training, seeing the creative ways he trains to get stronger and stuff like that so I don’t fully mind it being slightly repetitive cause the training shakes it up enough, and even if it didn’t training almost always is a tad repetitive so I don’t mind all that much, but I can understand where your coming from nor can I blame you since depending on how your looking at it it can get rather boring and.

Have you ever heard about character buildup my guy? Just because he hasn’t created the MC just like you wanted it to be doesn’t mean he won’t do it in the near future. You’ve read the last couple of chapters but have you completely forgotten about the last 10 where the author CLEARLY implies that shang personality will probably change for the better? Stop complaining just to complain and enjoy this novel

You do realize that the purpose is for him to beat GOD which has never been done ever in thousands of years. And you think it’s possible for him to gain a power enough to compete against him with distractions such as feelings? I think it’s totally logical as of right now for Shang to be the way he is since he still has a very long journey to gain more power. And it’s not like he was emotionless from the beginning, he tried before and his best friend was gonna kill him. So yeah it makes total sense for him to be emotionless as of right now. You keep complaining about how long the plot goes but you forget that the author usually gives decades of time skip which he doesn’t have to. Stop complaining or stop reading if you don’t like the way he writes because other people do.

It's not like the author wrote about something completely opposite to this before right?

What’s with the issue of him writing something similar? As to what I see, a lot of people enjoy both of his novels so what’s the problem ? Why don’t you write something outstanding to your own regards if you’re tired of reading the same sort of plot ?

And you're the one who couldn't even understand what i was pointing to. I was talking about the fact that author's previous work had a completely opposite development to this one, as in gravis has a much more fulfilling life and is getting stronger even faster and more efficiently than shang, all the while keeping his connections and keeping in touch with his emotions. Author also heavily criticized the way shang is going right now in his first book, yet he's going through with it?

His best friend was gonna kill him?? Jerald literally came clean with him and apologized, yet he still killed him? There's no saving that

        Reply
      • Excluded 1

Yeah he apologized AFTER Shang had to give out some of his secrets. Regardless of the fact, I don’t think you would be happy if someone tried to kill you and then just give an apology. Who’s to say Jerald wouldn’t have done it again? Zhang’s justification is totally viable since like he said more and more people will die the more he gets powerful. Obviously everyone is gonna wanna kill him, so what should he do? You might as well tell the author to force Shang to commit suicide. Cause everything you’re saying has literally no logic. You’re saying Shang shouldn’t have killed his friend, when 1) his friend tried to kill him, 2) his friend is incline to betray him again whether that be giving personal info to the lighting empire or straight up give shangs fighting style 3) Shang puts more value on his survival than than the benefit of others. That’s totally normal since legit everyone would do the same, and if you deny you’re a hypocrite.

If you don't mind reading a novel about a guy that does nothing but chase after power, not even living a life or interacting with others for a reason other than to get resources or kill someone, and feels like a robot instead of a human, then go ahead

Dunno why but I'm getting bored starting with Barbarian kingdom arc. Currently at the part where Spear guy dies and the story really isn't piquing my interest. Its kinda dragging and no interesting plot progression or interactions.

The barbarian arc is more about his personal character development, it sets up the rest of the story. By the time he comes back, the world he knows will have already changed and the story will pick up the pace monumentally, I recommend you read until he comes back and if you still don't like afterwards, then it's not for you. I hope this helped.
